DOD/VA Health Data Sharing
The Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs share a significant amount of health information today. The departments continue to spearhead numerous interagency data sharing activities and are delivering information technology solutions that significantly improve the secure sharing of appropriate electronic health information. These initiatives enhance health care delivery to beneficiaries and improve the continuity of care for those who have served our country.
Although DOD and the VA have different missions, thereby reflecting the unique business of each agency, there is a significant degree of overlap between the two departments in the areas of health care and beneficiary populations. The departments participate in joint work groups, with the goal of improving interoperability and consistent sharing of health care information. As the various DOD and VA health data sharing capabilities mature, the departments will continue to identify opportunities that will further streamline and promote efficiencies in the delivery of health care. This may encompass sharing more data, or improving the ease of use or access to the data already being shared.
Some of the current DOD/VA health data sharing initiatives include:
- Federal Health Information Exchange
- Pre and Post-Deployment Health Assessments and Post-Deployment Health Reassessments
- Bidirectional Health Information Exchange
- Clinical Data Repository/Health Data Repository
- Image Sharing
- Laboratory Data Sharing Initiative
